What are Feed-in Tariffs (FITs)?

A Feed-in Tariff (or FIT) is a government legislated policy. It guarantees a fixed premium price over the retail rate, payable to any person or organisation who generates renewable electricity and feeds (sells) it into the national grid or local electricity network.

If implemented in New Zealand, a FIT would pay consumers to produce electricity, rather than simply charging them to use it. By placing a legal obligation on power companies to buy renewable electricity from New Zealanders at a premium rate, renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaic, small wind and hydro become a worthwhile and secure investment for the many.

How do I benefit from FITs?

By registering as a supporter, you can stay informed and help REFIT-NZ to achieve a goal of providing the potential for the following returns on renewable energy investments in the future:

  • Around 8% gross annual return for solar PV installations on your home, farm or business
  • Around 8% gross annual return for wind turbines in your backyard, farm or community
  • Around 12% gross annual return for micro-hydro on your lifestyle block, farm or community

Whether or not you choose to produce your own renewable electricity, legislating Feed-in Tariffs will benefit every New Zealander.

Who is REFIT-NZ?

REFIT-NZ is a fully independent and not-for-profit organisation. We are educating New Zealanders about Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) as we believe this to be the world's best renewable energy law. FITs are already working successfully in over 45 OECD countries, states and provinces around the world.

Our purpose is to support New Zealanders to:

  • Achieve more control over electricity supply, demand and price
  • Build a case for a NZ Feed-in Tariff policy
  • Make that case available to the Government and other stakeholders
